Assley, Hareley, Hawkesbury and Inglestone Commons are managed through Higher Level Stewardship.

Higher Level Stewardship (HLS) is an agri-environment scheme that provides funding to land managers in England to deliver effective environmental management. The HLS agreement for Assley, Hareley, Hawkesbury and Inglestone Commons is a contract between South Gloucestershire Council and Natural England, who oversees the implementation of the scheme as part of the Rural Development Programme for England. The Agreement commenced in 2011 and will run for ten years until the end of March 2021.

The three main emphases of the HLS agreement are restoration of species-rich neutral grassland, which is delivered by grazing livestock, scrub management, which is particularly targeted towards providing suitable habitat for nightingale, and pond management, which is targeted towards the rare species which grow and live in the ponds.

You can download a copy of the HLS handbook and the HLS agreement by clicking the links below, and you can read more about the management of the Commons through Higher Level Stewardship under the 'Management' menu above.
