It is estimated that there are less than 15,000 hectares of unimproved neutral grassland remaining in the UK. 
 
It is vital that we protect and restore the species-rich grassland of the Commons and grassland restoration is a major priority under the Higher Level Stewardship agreement. There are two aspects to the grassland restoration plan through Higher Level Stewardship: conservation grazing and seed enhancement. You can read about these methods under the 'Grassland Management' menu above.

As part of the grassland management, there is temporary fencing between Assley Common and Inglestone Common. This is in place to keep grazing animals out of Assley and Hareley Commons until the grass of Assley and Hareley is cut and collected after 15th July. The fencing will then be removed. There is a pedestrian gate to allow pedestrian access between the commons. This technique is as recommended by Natural England for improving the success of wildflower enhancement. Section 38 consent has been obtained from the Secretary of State for this work, details are found files below.
